The Next Generation of Financial Advisors
Hi everyone! My name is Justin Halvorson and I am a senior finance major who has been involved with WMA since its inception three years ago. I have watched our club grow immensely in its short time on campus and am extremely proud to be a part of such a great organization! I am very excited to continue working with members, helping them grow in their professional, social and academic environments.
In addition to my involvement with WMA, I am involved in MSU’s accredited CFP program and intended to sit for the Certified Financial Planner exam upon my graduation. In Summer 2020, I interned as a Financial Advisor for Plante Moran and will return to the firm full time after I graduate in May 2021. I currently work for the Russel Palmer Career Management Center at the Eli Broad College of Business and hope to bring the knowledge I have learned to aiding members of WMA in their career search. My goal as President is to expand the career opportunities of WMA members by giving them the opportunity to interact with employers in financial planning and wealth management.
My involvement in WMA has allowed me to grow as a young professional while also meeting countless friends who share my passion for finance. If you enjoy working with people and are interested in a career in business, come join us at our weekly meetings!
Internal Vice President
Hi! My name is Alexandra and I am currently a senior at Michigan State University studying Finance in the Eli Broad College of Business with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I am also a member of the Financial Planning and Wealth Management Program.
This past summer I worked at Plante Moran as an Insurance Agency- Wealth Transfer intern, virtually. During this internship, I worked with the other members of the Plante Moran team to develop an estate plan for clients to help protect their wealth for future generations.
After graduation, I plan to continue working at Plante Moran starting August 2021 in East Lansing, Michigan. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, as well as world-traveling.
External Vice President
My name is Derek Cushman and I’m a Senior Finance Major in the Wealth Management Program. This enables me to sit for the CFP exam upon graduation. I have been involved with WMA since my Sophomore year as a member and joined the E-Board during my Junior year. A large role of my position is reaching out to different firms to share opportunities with club members.
During my Junior year, I worked as a student FAFSA Advisor for the MSU Office of Financial Aid. I gained valuable communication skills from that experience which helped me during my 2020 Summer Internship at Archer Huntley Financial Services. My main role was to create portfolios of all risk tolerances using excel and Morningstar. I did research on thousands of different funds from a variety of custodians. I would not have been connected to my employer without joining WMA.
I joined WMA to learn about the industry, gain connections with employers, and meet new people. This club has done that and then some. It seems like I receive an email about a job opportunity every day. This club has progressed significantly the past couple of years and I’m excited to watch it grow in the future!
Hello! My name is Costa Gianiodis and I am the Treasurer for the 2020-21 school year. I’m currently a senior student and have been involved with Wealth Management Association since my freshman year, but this is my first year on E-board. WMA is a great organization that provides students interested in financial planning and wealth management opportunities to engage with professionals, learn more about the industry and meet similar minded peers.
This summer I interned with Plante Moran Financial Advisors in their East Lansing office. I met a bunch of great people and learned a lot about investment management and holistic financial planning while working there. It was a great experience and I would recommend checking out opportunities at Plante Moran!
Check out our website at: msuwma.com to learn more about the group or feel free to reach out to me personally at firstname.lastname@example.org. I’m looking forward to meeting you at our next meeting, continuing to help you make connections in the industry and grow as a student!
Director of Recruitment
Hi! My name is Claire Okoniewski and I am completing my last semester at Michigan State University this fall. I joined the Wealth Management Association spring semester 2020 after hearing about the job opportunities Alexandra[HJ1] had been exposed to through WMA[HJ2] . I recognized the great opportunities WMA provides for students looking to go into wealth management and financial planning and immediately wanted to get more involved. Now that I am a member of E-board, I am looking forward to bringing in new members and seeing what they can accomplish through WMA’s resources and connections.
Over the summer, I was an intern for an Investment Specialist at Securian Financial Advisors and Michigan State University’s Center for Venture Capital, Private Equity and Entrepreneurial Finance (CVCPEEF). At Securian, I was able to gain experience working one-on-one with a financial advisor. I scheduled and attended client meetings, created and shared content on multiple social media platforms, attended events and learned how to use their E-money platform for financial analysis. At CVCPEEF, I integrated financial thinking and strategic decision-making with innovation and entrepreneurship by completing due diligence on potential investments. Both experiences have been extremely valuable and exposed me to different sides of investment.
The Wealth Management Association has led me to great connections and filled my network with professionals in the wealth management and financial planning industry. As a member of E-board, I am dedicated to spreading the word about this great opportunity and ensuring all new members get the most out of their involvement in WMA!
Director of Member Relations
Hello! My name is Justin Jackson and I am completing my final year at MSU this 2020-2021 school year. I joined WMA last fall and applied this year because I saw the passion in the club’s leadership and knew it was something I wanted to be involved in! The reason why I applied for the Director of Member Relations position is because I have a passion for people. I want to ensure that all our members have a great experience this year and learn a lot about the wealth management industry.
I am currently working for a firm called Financial MD. My firm serves as advisors to physicians across the country. I have completed all the CFP education requirements in the Financial Planning and Wealth Management program. I am currently studying for the series 65 exam and I hope to pass it this fall and the CFP exam summer 2021.
When I am not busy working or at school I like to camp, golf, and drink craft beer! I look forward to meeting everybody this fall! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!
