Many people are aware of the recent surge of weight loss drugs in the United States but often fail to recognize the effect on the food and grocery market. In June 2026, about 13.1% of U.S. adults were using GLP-1 drugs, up from 12% in November 2025. This quick jump likely reflects the recent widespread availability of oral GLP-1 medications. In June 2026, an industry report also found that more than 60% of users said they think about food less. While this may seem insignificant, it has a notable effect on the food industry. The demand for food products is taking a big hit.

GLP-1 users are estimated to consume 21% fewer calories while taking the medication, and the food system could see sales decline by $30 to $55 million by 2030. These impacts are likely to hit the food manufacturing and restaurant sectors hard. With demand dropping sharply, the farm sector could also take a significant hit.

The impact of GLP-1 medications varies across sectors of the food market. ING’s analysis revealed two sectors were particularly susceptible to GLP-1 medication impacts. These included alcohol products and snack items. As a result, some food companies that specialize in producing snack foods have experienced significant challenges due to the use of GLP-1 medications. Many of these companies have announced job cuts and/or organizational changes. Conversely, other research indicated that restaurants and convenience stores were unexpectedly successful during this period. Some early predictions also did not fully play out. When the drugs were first approved for obesity treatment in 2021, packaged food sales were expected to plummet, but the impact was not significant. Although this was the case, these medications are becoming much more popular with their current ease of access.

The impact of these medications is something to watch in the future. These medications are becoming increasingly popular, and changes in the food industry are likely to follow.  Many sources describe these medications as still in the early stages, and their impacts across multiple food industry sectors are already prominent.
